FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What days and times are you available?

  • Weekday sessions are M-F 6:00 PM-11:00 PM. Weekend sessions are S-S 9:00 AM-11:00 PM. If you require weekday daytime sessions, please reach out in advance.

What should we bring to our sessions?

  • Anything you need to perform your songs. This could be nothing (using the equipment that is always available here; please see the gear list above), or every piece of gear you own. The choice is up to you, but if you’re bringing your own gear, make sure it is set up for recording (new drumheads, guitar strings, and guitars are properly adjusted). If you’re using my gear it will be ready for recording at no cost to you.

Sending over any rough recordings, lyrics, BPMs, or reference material helps me better understand what you’re trying to achieve.

How far in advance should we book?

  • Two to three months is normal. In some cases, I can accommodate you on short notice, but it’s a safer bet to book in advance.

What if I need to cancel?

  • I will happily move your session to a different day with no additional cost to you. Everything is done here on a flat rate, and sometimes life happens. Please let me know as soon as you can if you are unable to make your session.

How much do you charge for recording?

  • Please see the ‘Rates’ section.

Do you charge points or percentages?

  • No. My rates are listed above and are exactly what I charge for the work I perform.

Do I own my music?

  • Whatever final product you create with me is 100% yours.

How do you record?

  • I can accommodate most scenarios, whether it’s live off the floor or multi-tracking to a click. My studio is set up in my house, so it's probably not the right fit for large orchestras. I don’t own a grand piano, so please plan accordingly.

Can you mix our record?

  • Yes, please email me at jay.voth@gmail.com for further information.

Can you master our record?

  • I recommend Brad Boatright @ Audiosiege (audiosiege.com) and Mike Kalajian @ Rogue Planet Mastering (rogueplanetmastering.com). If you have the room in your budget, it’s worth paying an experienced professional in a dedicated listening environment to give your songs a final check over. I can do a good job as well, but I do think this is an area where a second set of ears can really help.

Can you mix our record in Dolby Atmos?

  • I don’t mix in Atmos. I recommend a dedicated Dolby Atmos-equipped facility to handle this.

Can we apply for grants to work with you?

  • Yes, my studio is fully accredited with Manitoba Film & Music.

Can you master for vinyl release?

  • I have mastered several releases in this format and am comfortable doing so, but I still would recommend a dedicated mastering engineer.
